You had to lose something personal in a war. Otherwise, it was just a war like any other war. You were there and you did what you had to do and then it was a part of your past and you went on to the next war.
It rained a lot that autumn after I returned from El Salvador without my right hand. The fresh scar on the stump burned when it rained; I felt pain in fingers that were no longer there…
“What happened to you in Central America?” Kovic demanded. “Jack, lots of men have lost an arm. But it’s not just that, is it? Talk to me about it, buddy. What happened to you?”
Jack Dempsey Malanga had worked with the CIA before. He is known as a man who gets the dirty work done, in war and in between wars. Things begin to turn bad when his CIA contact in Central America asks, “Malanga, have you ever killed an American citizen?”
The American citizen is a gunrunner supplying weapons to communist guerrillas in the mountains of El Salvador. To get to him, Malanga must join the guerrillas and earn the trust of their ruthless leader and of Suyapa, a beautiful young rebel fighter who is the gunrunner’s lover. That’s when things become complicated. For Jack Malanga, El Salvador would soon become one too many wars. And his losses more than just his right arm...
Charles W. Sasser knows Latin America intimately. For more than ten years, he was a combat correspondent working in El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua during the period of The War Chaser. He was wounded along the Honduran-Nicaraguan border.
He is also a 29-year veteran (active and reserve) with the U.S. Navy (journalist) and U.S. Army Green Berets. His books and novels (more than 50 published) have sold millions in a number of languages throughout the world. They include best-sellers like One Shot-One Kill; The 100th Kill; Detachment Delta and OSS Commando series; The Return; A Thousand Years of Darkness...

Like some other reviewer I also had to read this one from start to finish. It is psychological noir at its best. A dark and dangerous and mysterious story, well told and well written. For me there were only two questions left unanswered. How does a man who has just had his arm chopped off fly a twin-engine airplane by himself? And how does he carry a dead body in that plane from South America into the U.S. to bury it in some western pine forest? Up to that point I was totally engrossed. If you can accept those two exceptions, then you can buy the whole concept. I must admit it is a page-turner filled with emotional and sexual tension. As I said, it is almost great.Product details

The War Chaser edition by Charles W Sasser Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Excellent read! ignored my kids for this one...
Highly recommended by the best critic ever, me. You won't regret it.
Starts off slowly but becomes more intense as you read on. Helps if you have some knowledge of the military.
A good plot and with a surprising ending. Act packed at times and handled well. I would find more by this author.
Interesting study of a man traumatized by his actions as a covert operative as they affect his present-day life. The focus is on the interplay of deceit, trust, lust, fulfilling a contract to kill for a government agency, love-lost, what is real and what is believed to be real and betrayal.
The War Chaser I got too far into the book to put it down. I wouldn't recommend it nor will I read this author again. By my OK that means I got to the end and wondered why I wasted time reading it.
One chapter was enough for me. Absolutely meatless with random vulgarities that lent nothing to the dialog or story development. Somewhere in the first chapter, one would expect to develop a need to go forward. I didn't.
Charles W. Sasser has the ability to quickly capture your attention and hold it throughout the story. His depiction of Central American people, landscapes, and lifestyles shows a first-hand knowledge of the subjects and settings. There is a psychological element counterplot giving insight to the damage a lifetime of violence can do to a person. I found it hard to put down.
